The more I learn about emotional neglect, the more I realize that people who were emotionally neglected as children often grow up to be extremely hard on themselves.
One way I get this sense is from how much the words around being “held” mean to so many people. It shows that while we may feel comfortable to some extent offering compassion and kindness to others, it’s often much more of a struggle for many to offer that same compassion and kindness to themselves.
