You know how there are dead giveaways in language that let people know something about you? Like how saying “y’all” means somebody’s probably spent significant time in the South? Or how calling a milkshake a “frappe” means somebody’s got something to do with New England? A dead giveaway for somebody having learned their Christianity in white evangelicalism is the way they talk about unity and division. Seriously, as I reflect, I have never met anyone who wasn’t white and evangelical, or ultra-assimilated and evangelical, who has ever said disunity was the primary issue at hand in any situation.
Don’t get me wrong, unity is important. The difference for me is found in whether one views it through an ethic of tolerance or an ethic of generative freedom. Let me explain:
