For Asian Americans and other children of immigrants, sometimes our parents just didn’t have enough to give. Learning new language, learning new culture, dealing with racialization, working long hours, etc.
One thing this may have done for many of us is that we learned to protect ourselves from feeling disappointed by our parents and caretakers. We learned to say, “I don’t know,” or “I don’t care.”
